Commercial Refrigeration Sydney
A Sydney cool room has to hold 5°C
through a 47-degree afternoon.
Standby installs, repairs and maintains cool rooms, freezer rooms, beer systems and commercial fridges for businesses across Sydney, built for the days that break refrigeration here.
Commercial refrigeration in Sydney, from a team that learned the trade here
Standby installs, repairs and maintains cool rooms, freezer rooms, bulk storage and beer systems for businesses across Sydney. Our founder Adam Magick did his apprenticeship and around thirteen years at Shannon Refrigeration in Kingsgrove, working on pubs, clubs, servos, fast food kitchens and butcher shops, before starting Standby in 2017.
We are based in Wollongong and work across Sydney metro, including breweries across Marrickville and the Inner West. Our tradesmen are Certificate 3 qualified and Standby is an ARC member with a refrigerant purchasing licence. Every job runs with a safe work method statement and a toolbox talk.
Why Sydney is hard on refrigeration
Western Sydney heat
The west can run around 10 degrees hotter than the coast on a summer day. Penrith reached 48.9°C on 4 January 2020. An air-cooled condenser dumps heat into the outside air, so the hotter that air gets, the less it can do and the closer it runs to a high-pressure trip.
Nights that stay warm
In Sydney’s record summer of 2016-17, 58 nights stayed above 20°C. A cool room that struggles through the afternoon gets no cool night to catch up, so it starts the next day behind.
Plant that is hard to reach
In the CBD, Surry Hills and the Inner West, condensers sit on rooftops, in laneways and in light wells where hot exhaust air hangs around. Replacing one can mean a crane or a lift working over a public footway.
What a Sydney heatwave does to a cool room
On 10 and 11 February 2017, while Richmond reached 47°C, the NSW grid ran short of power. The Tomago aluminium smelter was ordered to cut its load and households and businesses were asked to use less power to avoid blackouts, on the same weekend every cool room in Sydney was working its hardest.
Food safety rules do not relax for the weather. Chilled food has to stay at 5°C or colder. Once a room drifts above that, the NSW Food Authority’s 2-hour/4-hour rule starts a clock on everything in it. Our guide to cool room temperature covers what a room should read and the warning signs before it gives out. When a room holds well over $200,000 of stock, what protects it is a system sized and maintained for Sydney’s worst days rather than its average ones.
What we install, repair and maintain in Sydney
Cool rooms
Cool rooms built, repaired and maintained so they stay at temperature through a summer trading day.
Freezer rooms
Walk-in freezer rooms that keep stock frozen hard when the plant room is at its hottest.
Bulk storage rooms
Larger temperature-controlled rooms for distributors and producers. Much of the city’s cold storage sits in western Sydney, where the heat is worst.
Beer and glycol systems
Glycol chillers and cellar cooling for pubs, clubs and breweries across the Inner West. See beer and brewery systems.
Under-bar and display fridges
The fridges in bars, bottle shops and servos that never get a rest between customers.
Condensing units and controls
Condensing units, controllers and alarms, sized for a Sydney summer peak rather than the conditions printed on the rating plate.
Commercial fridge and cool room repairs in Sydney
Summer breakdowns in Sydney often come back to heat: a condenser coil clogged with city grime, a unit tripping on high pressure every afternoon, a system short of refrigerant or a fan motor that has finally given up. We repair cool rooms, freezer rooms, under-bar and display fridges and condensing units, including systems another contractor installed.
Our maintenance technician takes after-hours breakdown calls. How that cover works alongside scheduled visits is on our maintenance and breakdown page.
How a Sydney refrigeration job runs
Step 1
Site visit and access survey
We look at the room, the stock it holds and the plant. Then we work out how equipment gets on and off the roof or through the laneway before we quote.
Step 2
Design and fixed quote
We size the condensing unit for Sydney summer peaks and give it clear air so it does not breathe its own exhaust, then give you a fixed price.
Step 3
Permits and programme
Where a crane or lift has to work over the footway, we plan the council hoisting permit into the programme and schedule the work around your trading hours.
Step 4
Install, commission and handover
We install and commission the system, hand over the paperwork and book the first of the two first-year maintenance visits ahead of summer.
Book rooftop work before December
The City of Sydney needs a hoisting permit whenever a crane truck or elevated work platform works over a public road or footway. The application goes in at least two working days ahead with a $20 million public liability policy attached. Standby carries that cover along with a safe work method statement on every job. The City also restricts hoisting permits in the city centre through December, just as the heat arrives. If a rooftop condenser is due for replacement, spring is the time to do it.
Older systems and the refrigerant phase-down
Many older cool rooms still run on R404A. Those systems can legally keep running and keep being serviced, but Australia’s import quota for HFC refrigerants keeps stepping down until it reaches an 85% cut in 2036. Further restrictions are due to be settled by mid-2027. When an old R404A room needs a major repair, we will lay out the cost of repairing it against moving to a new system so you can decide with the numbers in front of you.
Where we work in Sydney
We work across Sydney metro: the CBD and Surry Hills, Marrickville, St Peters and the Inner West, the St George area around Kingsgrove and out to Parramatta and western Sydney. Venues on the coast have a different problem, which our commercial refrigeration Wollongong page covers. For licensed venues, see pubs and clubs.

Sydney refrigeration questions
You are based in Wollongong. Do you do commercial refrigeration across Sydney?
Yes. Sydney metro is regular territory for us. It is also where our founder learned the trade, with around thirteen years at Shannon Refrigeration in Kingsgrove. We work on breweries across Marrickville and the Inner West as well as pubs, clubs, bottle shops and cold storage across the city.
Why does my cool room struggle in a Sydney heatwave?
Because the condenser has to reject heat into air that is already hot. As the outside temperature climbs, the unit loses capacity and runs closer to a high-pressure trip. Western Sydney can run around 10 degrees hotter than the coast. Clean coils, the right refrigerant charge, clear air around the condenser and a system sized for Sydney peaks are what get a room through.
How much do commercial fridge repairs cost in Sydney?
The fault itself, the refrigerant the system uses and how much it needs, the parts, how hard the plant is to reach and whether the call-out is after hours all set the price. We diagnose the fault first and give you a fixed price before any repair goes ahead.
Can you still repair an older R404A cool room?
Yes. Existing R404A equipment can legally keep running and keep being serviced. Supply is tightening as Australia’s HFC import quota steps down towards 2036, so a major repair on an old system is a good moment to weigh up repairing against replacing.
What temperature does a commercial cool room have to hold?
5°C or colder for chilled food, under the national food safety standard that applies to every NSW food business. Frozen food should stay frozen hard. A room that drifts above 5°C starts the clock on everything stored in it.
