Ducted Air Conditioning Wollongong
Whole-home ducted, specced
for the way Illawarra homes are built.
Standby Services designs and installs ducted air conditioning across Wollongong and the Illawarra, from tight-roofed cottages on the coastal flat to split-level homes built into the escarpment. The crew runs out of Wollongong, so the roof-cavity assessment and the install both happen locally.
Ducted for the way Illawarra homes are built
Ducted plays out differently depending on where your home sits. On the coastal flat through Fairy Meadow and Corrimal a lot of the housing is older single-storey fibro and brick veneer with a tight, low-pitched roof cavity, and that cavity decides whether ducting retrofits cleanly or needs a rethink. Climb the escarpment into Keiraville, Mount Ousley and Mount Pleasant and the homes become two and three-storey builds terraced into the slope, where the top floor bakes while the bottom stays cool. Out west through Horsley, West Dapto and Calderwood the newer estates are being built ducted-ready from the slab up.
We spec the system to which of those your home is, working from room volume, ceiling height and how the place sits to the sun. That is what separates a system that holds every room from one that runs flat out trying to reach the far end of the house.
From roof cavity to zoned control
Step 1
Roof cavity assessment
We get into the roof space to check pitch, height and structure, because an older Illawarra cottage cavity and a new Calderwood build are two very different jobs.
Step 2
Zone design and sizing
The home gets split into zones around how you actually live in it, which matters most on the escarpment where upstairs and downstairs run at different temperatures.
Step 3
Ductwork and unit install
Certificate 3 trade qualified tradesmen run the ductwork, mount the indoor and outdoor units and handle the mechanical and electrical work.
Step 4
Zoning setup and commissioning
Zones are configured and tested, then the system is signed off to Australian standards with refrigerant logged under ARC requirements.
Step 5
First-year maintenance
Two included visits in the first twelve months, including a check that the roof-cavity ductwork is sealed and dry.
Ductwork that stays dry in a coastal roof space
A roof cavity a few kilometres from the sea gets hot and humid on a summer afternoon, and warm damp air sitting around cold ductwork means condensation when the insulation and sealing are not right. When the sealing is not right, that shows up as a damp patch on a ceiling a season or two later, long after the install is signed off. We insulate and seal duct runs for the coastal humidity the Illawarra gets, so the ducting stays dry in the part of the house you never see.
A local crew that comes back
A ducted system gets serviced by the crew that designed the duct runs, and that matters more than it sounds: whoever set the zoning knows where every run goes when a filter or a zone needs a look years down the track. Standby runs out of Wollongong, so booking those maintenance visits means a crew already working the same suburbs. If you are weighing ducted against a room-by-room approach, the split system option sits on its own page.

Ducted air conditioning Wollongong: common questions
Can ducted air conditioning be retrofitted into an older Wollongong home?
Usually yes, but it depends on the roof cavity. A lot of the older single-storey cottages on the coastal flat through Fairy Meadow and Corrimal have a tight, low-pitched roof space that makes duct runs harder than a new build. We get into the cavity during the site visit and tell you honestly whether ducting can be retrofitted cleanly before you commit to it.
How do you handle ducted zoning for a split-level home on the escarpment?
Homes terraced into the escarpment around Keiraville, Mount Ousley and Mount Pleasant tend to run hot upstairs and cool downstairs. We zone those levels separately so each floor holds its own temperature, rather than cooling the whole house to fix one warm room at the top.
Does the coastal humidity cause condensation on ducted ductwork?
It can when the roof cavity runs hot and the duct insulation is not up to it. The fix sits in the spec: properly rated duct insulation, sealed joints and enough roof ventilation to move the moisture out before it settles on cold ducting. We build ducted runs to that standard across the Illawarra, and the two first-year maintenance visits include a check that the insulation is still doing its job.
How much does ducted air conditioning cost in Wollongong?
For a smaller home, ducted installs typically start around $8,000 and rise with house size, the number of zones and how difficult the roof access is. An eligible NSW ESS rebate can bring some of that back. We give a fixed number after walking the roof space, not before.
Does ducted air conditioning qualify for the NSW rebate?
If the system meets the efficiency criteria under the NSW Energy Savings Scheme, yes. Standby is an accredited NSW Government rebate installer. Full eligibility detail sits on our rebate page.
