Data Centre & Server Room Air Conditioning

A data centre runs its cooling the way a hospital runs its power: it does not get to stop. Racks of equipment throw off heat around the clock. If the air conditioning drops out the room climbs toward a thermal shutdown in minutes, not hours. That changes what matters in the plant. The design carries redundancy so a single failure does not take the room down. The maintenance schedule catches wear long before it becomes a fault, all while temperature and humidity stay inside a tight band. A CRAC unit is a computer room air conditioner: a unit with its own compressor and refrigerant circuit, built to run around the clock and hold a room inside a narrow band of temperature and humidity. You will also hear the same job called precision cooling or close control air conditioning. Where a site runs on chilled water from a central plant, the equivalent unit is a CRAH, a computer room air handler.

The difference from office air conditioning is what it cools. Comfort air conditioning looks after people, who give off moisture as well as heat and go home at night. Server racks give off dry heat every hour of the year, so the units built for them move more air across the coil and control humidity directly.

Standby installs CRAC units, pipes them up, commissions them and maintains them on a schedule. On larger sites that is usually to a mechanical contractor's design. The same crew installs supplementary units, the extra cooling that goes in once a base build is finished and the racks start arriving.

A lot of the equipment that needs cooling like this is nowhere near a data centre. It sits in the server room at the back of an office or the comms room in a club, a school, a medical practice or a warehouse. The heat load is smaller, but the room has the same problem: the equipment runs all night and all weekend while the building's air conditioning does not.

The usual answer is supplementary air conditioning, a dedicated unit that runs independently of the building's comfort system. It keeps the room cool after hours and through the days the main plant is off or down for service. Standby installs server room cooling of this kind and sizes it to the heat the equipment puts out, since floor area tells you very little in a room like this.
